OPINION:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is seeking regulations to require child-seat modifications for children weighing up to 40 pounds (“AP Exclusive: Government to propose that child car seats protect kids in side-impact crashes,” Web, Jan. 22).
It would be interesting to learn how many millions (or billions) of dollars are going into the testing of these child seats and the reissuing of regulations to require manufacturers to change their seat models.
I’d also like to know how much it is going to cost families to abide by these new regulations by disposing of their current seats and buying new ones.
It seems that there is no end to government believing that the welfare of each and every one of us is its responsibility.
Each year, there are more than 18,000 abortions performed on infants of 21 weeks or more, yet the government does absolutely nothing about this catastrophe except fund much of it.
Still, the NHTSA wants child seats modified to prevent what they estimate is five child deaths and 64 child injuries per year.
It is a given that every year government creates more departments with lawmaking authority, and lawmaking is their game.
They can’t justify their existence unless they unleash such authority and persuade us that it is for our personal welfare or the welfare of their token victim.
