LOS ANGELES (AP) - Trial begins this week for a second teacher from Miramonte Elementary School in Los Angeles to be accused of child abuse.

The Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/1ajIOhc ) reports Martin Springer has pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of committing a lewd act.

The case involves a second-grader who authorities said was fondled in class in 2009. If convicted, the 51-year-old Springer faces up to 12 years in prison.

Springer’s lawyer, John Tyre, said that innocent behavior had been blown out of proportion because of the Mark Berndt case.

Berndt is the former Miramonte teacher who last year pleaded no contest to charges of committing lewd acts on children in what authorities said he called “tasting games.”

He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
