TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Gov. Chris Christie has issued a state of emergency as a major winter storm socks New Jersey with snow.
Christie made the announcement Monday afternoon, as snow continued to fall across most of the state. Travel conditions were expected to remain hazardous, and drivers were being urged to allow extra travel time or postpone their trips if possible.
Christie also authorized a staggered dismissal for nonessential state employees to help alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel hazards.
The weather also caused power outages in some areas. PSE&G reported 2,670 customers had lost power, while 3,435 Jersey Central Power and Light customers had no service.
The storm also forced hundreds of cancellations at area airports. That hampered the efforts of Super Bowl fans trying to fly home from New Jersey.
