CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The Senate Education Committee unanimously recommended Friday that the full Senate confirm the appointment of Richard Crandall as director of the state Department of Education.

The action came as the state Supreme Court declined to reconsider its decision striking down a law that removed Cindy Hill, the elected superintendent of public instruction, as head of the education department.

That law, enacted last year, replaced the elected superintendent with a director appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate. Gov. Matt Mead appointed Crandall to the new director’s job.

No one raised the confusing legal situation - or competing heads of the education department - during the education committee hearing Friday. Committee Chairman Hank Coe, R-Cody, said lawmakers ought to “go on with business as usual” until the issue plays out.

Crandall welcomed his confirmation, while Hill welcomed the court decision that she said restored her duties.
