PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Foundation awarded $31.1 million in grants in 2013, the most in its history. That’s up 2 percent from $30.4 million in 2012.

The state’s largest community foundation also reported Friday that last year was its third-best fundraising year. It brought in $43.7 million from individual, organizational and corporate donors, compared to $38 million in 2012.

The foundation said more than 1,300 nonprofit organizations received funding. Of the $31 million awarded, nearly $11.4 million was in discretionary grants.

The foundation awarded $325,000 to the Highlander Charter School for a “blended learning” initiative; $200,000 for services for the blind; and $351,000 for food banks, homeless shelters and free clinics that help Rhode Islanders meet basic needs.

The foundation’s total assets were more than $780 million at year-end.
