ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Republican gubernatorial candidate David Craig and running mate Jeannie Haddaway are facing fines for a fundraising violation.
The Washington Post reports (https://wapo.st/1cfpJy0) the two candidates’ campaign committees have both been assessed $1,000 civil penalties for violating the state’s prohibition on fundraising during the legislative session.
Election officials say the campaign solicited contributions by email a few days after the General Assembly session began. But state law prohibits lawmakers and statewide officials from raising money during the session. The law doesn’t apply to Craig, who is the Harford County executive, but election officials say Haddaway, a delegate from Talbot County, cannot be a part of Craig’s solicitations during the session.
Craig has agreed to pay back money raised through the email solicitation.
