EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - Evanston and Northwestern University officials are announcing a partnership to employ city residents on campus construction projects.
The Workforce Development Program announced Thursday will seek employment and apprenticeship opportunities on campus building projects for 25 residents.
Northwestern’s Facilities Management Division is committing to contractors hiring qualified Evanston residents and has pledged to spend at least $1 million a year with local businesses.
Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl says the program will build a network of trained workers for future years.
The program will begin with a pilot phase during this year’s construction season.
The city will announce in the coming weeks an “open call” for those interested in joining the program. The city will review applicants and provide qualified candidates to Northwestern.
