BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Amtrak is expected to resume normal operations through Grand Forks, Devils Lake and Rugby in North Dakota this week.
U.S. Sen. John Hoeven has announced that the change will go into effect Saturday. The Republican from North Dakota says reliable rail service is essential in the state because of its growing economy and population.
Because of increased rail traffic and a severe winter season, BNSF Railway rerouted the westbound Empire Builder line to bypass Grand Forks, Devils Lake and Rugby. That meant passengers were bused to and from Fargo and Minot. Eastbound traffic has maintained its usual route along the state’s northern tier.
Hoeven met with BNSF senior officials earlier this month. The company agreed to invest in locomotives and crews in North Dakota to improve Amtrak and freight service.
