ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry has appointed a retired police commander and former Department of Public Safety deputy secretary to head a panel reviewing police policies on child abuse cases.
Marie “Sisi” Miranda was introduced to reporters Friday and says she will looks at all policies and technology in the wake of two high-profile deaths.
The department and state’s child-welfare agency faced criticism after an Albuquerque woman was charged in December with kicking her 9-year-old son to death. Reports later surfaced that the child had tried to report previous abuse and Albuquerque police were called to his home twice.
In addition, authorities arrested 19-year-old Elijah Fernandez recently on charges of child abuse resulting in death and aggravated criminal sexual penetration in connection with the death of a 4-month-old infant.
