FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s campaign is releasing a new TV ad focused on coal.
The commercial debuting Thursday features McConnell, who says anti-coal rhetoric in Washington needs to stop. He vows to lead the opposition to any federal efforts that would hurt the coal sector.
Coal has become a big issue in Kentucky’s Senate race. Kentucky’s coal industry has been in a prolonged economic slump, and McConnell blames more stringent environmental regulations.
The McConnell campaign says the ad will air during University of Kentucky and University of Louisville basketball games for the rest of the season.
McConnell is seeking a sixth term this year. He’s opposed by Louisville businessman Matt Bevin in the May 20 GOP primary. Alison Lundergan Grimes is the Democratic front-runner in the race.
