SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Three Salem lawmakers have asked the Oregon Department of Human Services to delay sending a 6-year-old American-born girl to live in Mexico with her father, who has convictions for assault, including domestic violence.

The agency says Gov. John Kitzhaber has also asked for a review of the case.

The Salem Statesman Journal reports (https://stjr.nl/MygAnB ) the girl is in foster care because her mother is addicted to methamphetamine and hasn’t complied with court orders for urinalysis and rehabilitation.

The agency makes a priority of reuniting a child with a legal parent. The girl’s grandmother has protested.

A judge has completed a hearing. The agency had said the girl could go to Mexico at any time.

Department officials met Tuesday with Senate President Peter Courtney, Sen. Jackie Winters and Rep. Vicki Berger.
