Johnny Manziel, a.k.a. “Johnny Football” for his star-showing with Texas A&M and his similarly star status as he winds toward the NFL draft, has nonetheless one detractor: Former Oklahoma head coach Barry Switzer said he’s an “arrogant little [expletive]” who embarrasses his team.
“I don’t like his antics,” Mr. Switzer said, to InsideSTL. “I think he’s an arrogant little [expletive]. I’ve said that and I’ll say it again. He’s a privileged kid, he’s embarrassed himself, he’s embarrassed his teammates, he’s embarrassed his coaches.”
Mr. Maziel is largely expected to be a first-round draft quarterback pick. But not all see his status as golden. ESPN Ron Jaworski, for instance, said he’d wait a round or two — or more — before bidding for the former All American.
Mr. Switzer, meanwhile, who led the Oklahoma Sooners to three national titles and later the Dallas Cowboys to the Super Bowl, said as much as he dislikes Mr. Manziel’s bravado antics, he has to admit he’s one of the best in the game.
“For whatever his antics are … he’s the best that I’ve seen,” he said, to InsideSTL. “I have never seen a quarterback in college football … control [the] game like he does and put up the numbers he does. It is fantastic what he’s done, against good competition. Game after game after game he puts numbers up that are staggering. … He’s the most dominant, most dynamic college quarterback I’ve ever seen in a long, long time.”
