Three people are dead and three more injured in a plane crash on Hawaii’s Lanai Island, authorities reported.

The incident happened late Wednesday evening, nearby the island’s main airport, Maui County spokesman Rod Antone said, The Associated Press reported.

It’s not clear what led to the crash, but the mishap occurred just as the plane was taking off, AP said. Three were killed and two seriously injured. A third was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries, Mr. Antone said.

Authorities don’t know how many travelers were on board, and they didn’t release the size or model of the craft, AP said.
