JERICHO, Vt. (AP) - The town of Jericho, Vt., has been run by a three-person Selectboard for more than two centuries, but voters are deciding whether to bump the board up to five members.
Candidate Don Messier organized the petition drive to get the question on this year’s Town Meeting ballot. He told the Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/1cmq2S2) that a larger board offers more representation and is more diverse. Tim Nulty, the current chairman, opposes the change, saying the expansion would be a fix for a problem that doesn’t exist.
The town started with three selectmen in 1786, went to five in 1787, and then back to three.
Among 158 towns that responded to a survey last year, there was a nearly even split among those that have three-member boards and those having five.
