Forty-six people leaped to their deaths from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge last year in what appears to be the worst year for suicides at the landmark.
Mary Currie, spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, confirmed that 2013 was the worst year for suicides at the bridge since at least 2000, when the agency began keeping an unofficial count, Reuters reported.
The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the world’s most popular places for public suicides. With the road surface towering more than 220 feet above the strait, jumps from the bridge are almost always fatal.
Miss Currie said police officers or others had intervened to stop another 118 people from leaping off the bridge last year, Reuters reported.
Officials are still seeking an estimated $66 million to construct a safety net beneath the bridge’s sidewalks to catch people who jump.
