BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (AP) - The city council in a southwest Ohio suburb has scrapped the annual Fourth of July parade and fireworks as a cost-cutting measure.

The Dayton Daily News (https://bit.ly/1hy4Onr ) reports that the Dayton suburb of Beavercreek did away with the festivities to save money after significant reductions in state funding.

Mayor Brian Jarvis told city council this week that operating expenses in the city of about 45,000 have been cut about 5 percent since 2011, but more budget reductions are necessary.

Jarvis said the decision was made he visited businesses and individuals looking for sponsors for the July Fourth activities. While he spoke with people willing to contribute, it wasn’t enough money to cover the expenses.

Last year the city spent about $22,500 on the festivities.
