NEW YORK (AP) - The New York City Council’s finance director has been arraigned on an assault charge after he was accused of domestic violence.

Preston Niblack (NIHB’-lak) pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. He was taken into custody Tuesday at the apartment he shared with Helvio de Faria (HEHL’-vee-oh deh-FAHR’-ee-uh).

De Faria told police that Niblack bloodied him with a statue. He was treated at a hospital and released.

The judge has ordered Niblack to have no contact with de Faria for six months.

Niblack has worked for the City Council since 2008.

A spokesman for its speaker, Melissa Mark-Viverito, says she is taking the allegations very seriously.

The arrest was first reported by the Daily News.
