NEW YORK (AP) - The New York City Comptroller believes city schools are getting a sour deal on their milk.
Scott Stringer released a report Wednesday that raised questions about possible collusion between milk vendors awarded $134 million in city contracts.
Stringer says the three companies who competed for five-year contracts in 2008 became business partners soon after the deal was struck.
The comptroller says the Department of Education ignored red flags that “its milk contracts may have been tainted.”
The audit did not discover explicit evidence of collusion. But it forwarded the matter to the U.S. Department of Justice.
One of the dairies has since gone bankrupt. The other two, Elmhurst Dairy and Bartlett Dairy, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Department of Education also did not immediately respond.
