FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) - After nine months in Afghanistan, more than 117 Fort Knox soldiers are back at home.

The soldiers are from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, and they landed Tuesday.

The unit has been operating in the Zabul province in southern Afghanistan. Units from the 3rd IBCT have been spread around Afghanistan helping Afghan security forces, government and police forces in the transition to independent security.

Many of the soldiers on the flight Tuesday were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, which conducted separate combat operations throughout various regions of Afghanistan.

The unit will continue to send soldiers home in small groups through May.
