Two gun control advocacy groups are railing against a measure passed by Georgia lawmakers that will allow legal carriers to bring guns into schools, churches, bars and some government facilities.
The Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and the Georgia Gun Sense Coalition plan to rally at the state Capitol Tuesday in opposition to the Safe Carry Protection Act, which passed the House last week by a vote of 119-56, according to the Associated Press.
The bill, if ultimately approved by the full General Assembly and signed into law by the governor, would “allow teachers to carry firearms, while others with licenses could take their guns into houses of worship, more bars and [some] government offices,” the Associated Press reported.
The bill is aimed at reducing what one lawmaker, Rep. Rick Jasperse, calls the danger that comes with gun free zones.
“[These zones] are gun free to the good guys only,” he said, the Associated Press reported.
