Former President Bill Clinton touched down in Kentucky for his first political campaign stop of the year — to support Democratic Alison Lundergan Grimes’ quest to oust Sen. Mitch McConnell from office.
Ms. Grimes’ father is Mr. Clinton’s longtime friend, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Clinton is set to keynote a fundraiser for Ms. Grimes in Louisville on Tuesday.
Mr. McConnell’s sixth term approached — but it’s been marked by plenty of opposition from Democrats, who see his seat as vulnerable, and from tea party types who think his time on Capitol Hill should come to an end.
Mr. McConnell, for his part, is trying to maintain his office with a campaign strategy that links Ms. Grimes to President Obama, whose popularity has nosedived in Kentucky. The Democrats, apparently, have countered with Mr. Clinton: The former president won the state during his White House runs while wife, Hillary, was popular with the people during her failed run for the nation’s highest office in 2008, AP reported.
