DERIDDER, La. (AP) - A state audit recommends Beauregard Parish Schools increase security measures after it was revealed last year that a school bookkeeper had stolen over $147,000 in school activity funds.

The former bookkeeper was arrested on Nov. 15 after an investigation by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s office.

The audit says the school board found it was not feasible to separate the bookkeeper duties due to cost of hiring additional personnel. The audit report recommends that the school board segregate the duties of bookkeeper so that he or she is strictly dealing with bookkeeper-related business.

Superintendent Timothy Cooley tells the American Press (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb ) the school board has already taken steps to prevent fund misappropriation by employees in the future.
