JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi House members are now eyeing a narrower sales tax holiday for guns, ammunition, bows, arrows and accessories.
The House Ways and Means Committee passed House Bill 1404 Monday. It would create the Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday, which would occur on the first Saturday and Sunday of September.
It does not remove sales tax on some items covered by an earlier bill, including boats, all-terrain vehicles and clothing. It does include hearing protection, firearm and archery cases, accessories and holsters.
Louisiana, South Carolina and West Virginia have similar sales tax holidays.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jeff Smith, a Columbus Republican, estimated the state would surrender $600,000 a year under the earlier bill, based on Louisiana.
House Speaker Philip Gunn, a Clinton Republican, is the new bill’s sponsor.
