Former Rep. Mel Reynolds was deported to the United States over charges he violated immigration laws in Zimbabwe.
One of Mr. Reynolds’ attorneys, Arthur Gurira, said Mr. Reynolds was also ordered to pay $100 fine — or go to jail for five days, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Reynolds pleaded guilty to breaking Zimbabwean immigration law by staying past the deadline date of his visa, AP said.
Mr. Reynolds, 62, is no stranger to controversy and legal scuffles. He lost his congressional seat in Illinois in 1995 after he was convicted of statutory rape, AP reported.
In Zimbabwe, Mr. Reynolds was also at risk of being prosecuted for possession of pornography after officials discovered images of naked people on his iPhone, AP reported. But those charges were dropped after the judge found the police didn’t have the correct prosecution order.
