Sam Worthington, the actor best known for his leading role in the 2009 hit “Avatar,” was arrested in New York City for assault charges stemming from an altercation with a photographer.

Mr. Worthington was charged with punching photographer Sheng Li in the face, CNN reported.

The actor claimed the photographer kicked his girlfriend in the shins, New York Police Department Detective Kellyann Ort said, in the CNN report.

The incident occurred Sunday evening in Greenwich Village. Mr. Worthington was given a ticket to appear in court, then released. The photographer, meanwhile, was held for arraignment, CNN reported.

Nobody was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Mr. Worthington, who was named “GQ Man of the Year” in 2009 in Australia, has also acted in “Clash of the Titans” in 2010 and “Man on a Ledge” in 2012.
