Actor and five-term NRA president Charlton Heston is slated to be among the U.S. Postal Service’s new line of commemorative stamps.
Mr. Heston, who gave memorable performances in “Planet of the Apes” and “Ben-Hur,” led the NRA from 1998-2003. He died in 2008.
If approved, the already-designed Heston stamp will become part of the Postal Service’s “Legends of Hollywood” series, which already includes James Stewart, Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland, The Hollywood Reporter said.
According to Roy Betts, a spokesman for the Postal Service, the agency will take into account various feedback before a final decision is made about the Heston stamp. The design and a description, however, is already available on the agency’s blog. The blog makes no mention of Mr. Heston’s dedication to the NRA.
“Although Heston once joked, ’I have played three presidents, three saints and two geniuses. If that doesn’t create an ego problem, nothing does,’ he was known to be humble about his work, often crediting his success to his directors,” the description reads.
“Heston was president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1965 to 1971 and served as president of the American Film Institute from 1983 to 2002 … In 2003, President George W. Bush presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.”
The USPS blog says the Charlton Heston stamp will be issued as a Forever stamp later this year.
