WASHINGTON (AP) - Data released by the District of Columbia shows very few students in the city attend their assigned public schools.

The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/1k0RxFt ) reports only about a quarter of D.C. students attend their assigned schools. The data also shows that students spread out widely across the city from their neighborhoods.

On average, elementary students living in one D.C. school boundary actually attend 64 different schools. In some neighborhoods the diaspora is much broader.

Data released by the deputy mayor for education also shows students living east of the Anacostia River in wards 7 and 8 tend to travel much further to schools than students in other parts of the city.

With so many students traveling to different schools, it makes the city’s effort to overhaul school boundaries even more complicated.
