EL PASO, Texas (AP) - The University of Texas at El Paso is now a tobacco-free campus.
Assistant vice president for environment health and safety Robert Moss says the policy has been under consideration for years and now is a reality after approved by the University of Texas System.
The ban on smoking and chewing tobacco covers any university building or property and grounds, including parking lots and housing.
The El Paso school previously allowed smoking near entrances and exits. Moss tells the El Paso Times (https://bit.ly/1fjloKo) that signs noting the prohibition started going up Friday and ash trays started being removed.
The school is now one of at least five University of Texas System schools that ban tobacco. Overall, more than 20 Texas colleges and universities are smoke- or tobacco-free.
