SOCHI, Russia (AP) - The Netherlands won gold in the last speedskating event of the Sochi Olympics, routing Poland in the final of women’s team pursuit Saturday.
The trio of Ireen Wust, Marrit Leenstra and Jorien ter Mors cruised to victory with a time of 2 minutes, 58.05 seconds - their third Olympic record in three pursuit races.
Poland never had a chance. The Dutch were ahead by 1.64 seconds after the first half-lap, and the margin just kept getting bigger from there.
The bronze went to Russia, which defeated Japan in the third-place race.
The Dutch finished speedskating with a staggering haul: eight golds and 23 medals in all. Wust won her fifth medal in Sochi, more than any other athlete - two golds and three silvers.
