YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio congressman is among about 30 community and business leaders urging trustees to make former football coach Jim Tressel the next president of Youngstown State University.

Rep. Tim Ryan’s letter to trustees says the supporters believe Tressel has the skills to lead the school.

The former Youngstown State coach resigned at Ohio State amid a scandal involving players and is now an executive vice president at the University of Akron.

It’s not clear whether he’s been contacted about the Youngstown position, and he hasn’t commented. A University of Akron spokeswoman tells the Akron Beacon Journal it would be inappropriate for Tressel or the school to comment on any outside inquiries.

Youngstown State is in need of a new leader because President Randy Dunn has accepted a different job.
