MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Assembly Republicans have approved a bill ending minimum wage mandates for local government workers and contractors in Madison and Milwaukee.
Wisconsin law prohibits local governments from enacting living wage ordinances. The prohibition doesn’t apply to government workers and contractors, however.
Madison, Dane County, Milwaukee and Milwaukee County have ordinances that require workers and contractors get a minimum wage. Republican Rep. Chris Kapenga’s bill would invalidate such ordinances as applied to employees and contractors paid with state or federal money that passes through the state.
The bill also would invalidate local residency requirements for contractors paid with state or federal money.
Democrats ripped the bill as an attack on local control during debate Thursday, but the Assembly still passed the measure 56-37. It goes next to the state Senate.
