WASHINGTON (AP) - The Washington Post has endorsed D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser in the city’s Democratic mayoral primary.

The Post editorial board cited the years-long federal investigation of Mayor Vincent Gray’s 2010 campaign in declining to back him for a second term. The Post wrote that the crimes committed by four aides to help Gray get elected and his “refusal to be forthcoming” about those events are “close to disqualifying.”

The Post did not back Gray in 2010 either, instead endorsing then-mayor Adrian Fenty.

The Post says it believes Bowser would be “a force for continued progress” in education, public safety and economic development. The newspaper notes that Bowser understands the need for continued growth and the stresses growth can bring.

The primary is set for April 1. Early voting starts March 17.
