BURKE, Vt. (AP) - Coaches and students at Vermont’s Burke Mountain Academy are cheering the gold-medal win of alumna Mikaela Shiffrin in the women’s slalom.
The school watched the women’s slalom race live online Friday morning in the student center.
Burke Headmaster Kirk Dwyer says the most exciting part of the race was when the 18-year-old Shiffrin made a big mistake and recovered midway through the second run.
Dwyer says although she was the favorite to win, “It’s one thing to be the favorite and it’s far harder to be the favorite and deliver, especially at her age.”
The Vail-Co. native graduated from Burke last June.
