SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - The Saginaw School District has approved a budget that turns its athletic department into a self-funded department.

The Saginaw News reports (https://bit.ly/MgiadM ) the Board of Education approved a budget Thursday for the 2015-2016 school year as part of efforts to prevent a state takeover of the financially troubled district. The budget is projected to save $5.3 million.

Superintendent Carlton Jenkins says the district has “a chance to save ourselves.”

The district has an $81 million annual budget and a projected shortfall of $32 million over five years, from 2011 to 2016. In 2011, the state began financial oversight of the district and required deficit-elimination plans to correct overspending by 2016.

The board cut the $457,000 athletic budget. The district earlier approved some school closings as part of a cost-cutting effort.
