New Jersey will likely lose a $7.6 million Obamacare grant from the federal government after it failed to submit a plan by Thursday’s deadline on how it would use the money, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
The newspaper reports that the Garden State got the funding two years to help it set up an insurance marketplace under the Affordable Care Act, but it had to rededicate the funds to consumer outreach after it decided to rely on the federal government’s market, or “exchange.”
Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, failed to submit a new blueprint for how it would spend the funds, so the grant will likely lapse and be returned to the Health and Human Services Department, the Star-Ledger reported.
“We have reached out to the state numerous times over the last few months in order to avoid a last-minute scramble, but unfortunately the state has yet to send us a request to re-scope their grant for any allowable activities,” HHS spokesman Fabien Levy told the newspaper.
