A Kentucky man has decided that he’ll go a year without wearing any socks or shoes to raise money for children in Africa who don’t have anything to put on their feet.

The trek so far for Richard Hudgins, who works as a hair stylist, has been interesting: He’s gone barefoot to the gym, to drop his daughter at school and to work. And he’s even survived the winter; his fundraising effort started in December, The Associated Press reported.

“You really do build a tolerance up,” Mr. Hudgins said, AP reported. “The ice isn’t so bad. It’s the snow, because the snow gets on the top of my feet.”

His goal is to raise $25,000 — and so far, he’s raised about $4,000, AP said.

The money will provide for about 800 children in Narok, Kenya, he said.
