BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana University professor who formerly taught high school math in Russia has been awarded $2.7 million to establish a new mathematics laboratory in Russia.
Vladimir Touraev has won one of 42 special grants awarded by the Russian government this year. The grants go to scientists from around the world so they can conduct research in Russia.
Indiana University says Touraev plans to establish a center in the central Russian city of Chelyabinsk that will include about 20 students and an equal number of experienced mathematicians.
He’ll receive funding to organize and operate the new laboratory through 2016.
He can also apply to extend his project for another two years.
