Google’s newest invention is an Android phone that provides users with real-time, on-demand, 3-D maps of their surroundings.
Called “Project Tango,” a prototype of the phone made its debut this week, complete with a motion-tracking camera and two processors that create an actual three-dimensional image of a real-life scene — that changes as the user moves the phone to reflect the real-time surroundings, IGN reported.
It’s still in the early testing phase, but developers are hopeful they’ve created a winner.
“We are physical beings that live in a 3-D world,” Google officials said in a statement, Time reported. “Yet, our mobile devices assume that [the] physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen.”
The device was developed by Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects center. It’s currently being offered to 200 developers who might be interested in creating apps for the phone, Time reported.
