SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A helicopter unit from the Georgia National Guard is heading to Afghanistan for what’s expected to be a nine-month deployment.

Citizen-soldiers from Bravo Company of the 1st Battalion, 169th General Support Aviation Regiment are scheduled to depart Friday from Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, where the unit is based.

The roughly 60 Savannah guardsmen deploying are trained for medical evacuations, air assault and other combat support roles. Some members of the company have already served in Afghanistan twice since 2005.

This will be the first time members of Bravo Company deploy overseas with the latest model of Chinook helicopter, the CH-47F.
