SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Democratic lawyers’ group is pressing the U.S. Justice Department to reopen its investigation of former Utah Attorney General John Swallow.

In a letter sent Thursday to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, the Utah Democratic Lawyers Council cited concerns about the adequacy of a previous investigation.

The council says there are significant questions about how federal investigators could have overlooked the large amount of data missing from Swallow’s electronic devices and computers that the Utah House Special Investigative Committee uncovered last fall.

In September, the Justice Department notified Swallow that it would not file charges against him.

Swallow, a Republican who has maintained his innocence, was accused of offering several businessmen protection in return for favors.

He resigned as attorney general in December.
