CHICAGO (AP) - Federal officials say a suburban Chicago physician is facing charges of fraudulently billing Medicare and conspiring to illegally dispense prescription medication.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago says 47-year-old Sathish Narayanappa Babu of Bolingbrook was arrested Wednesday. He owns Anik Life Sciences Medical Corp. in Darien.

The charges were announced on Thursday.

Officials say Babu allegedly conspired to illegally dispense oxycodone and billed Medicare for services he didn’t provide.

He was charged with one count each of conspiracy to illegally dispense a controlled substance and health care fraud. He is free on $100,000 bond.

Prosecutors allege that Babu issued five prescriptions for OxyContin to a person he’d never seen or examined. That person was actually an undercover agent.

He also allegedly submitted false claims to Medicare.
