NEWPORT, Wash. (AP) - Pend Oreille County Sheriff Alan Botzheim and one of his deputies have rescued a 60-year-old woman who fell through ice into the Pend Oreille River near Newport.
The sheriff’s office received a report of cries for help on Thursday morning.
Deputy Steve Beery was the first to arrive and saw a woman in the river, holding onto a piece of ice.
The Spokesman-Review (https://bit.ly/1fgbIQN ) reports the woman had been in the water for more than 20 minutes and had lost the strength to move.
Beery donned a life jacket, tied a rope to himself and helped the woman onto an ice shelf. Botzheim held the rope as Beery brought the woman to shore.
The press release says the woman was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.
