COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Federal environmental regulators have cited the parent company of a South Carolina utility for spilling hundreds of thousands of gallons of untreated sewage.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday said it had issued a notice of violation to Utilities Inc., the parent company of Tega Cay Water Services.
EPA and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control officials visited Tega Cay in December. Last year, the EPA says the utility had at least 27 overflows, dumping out more than 446,000 gallons of untreated sewage.
No fines have been issued, but the notice requires Tega Cay to follow DHEC-ordered fixes issued earlier this year. The EPA will monitor progress and repairs over the next two years.
