THORNBURG, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to make improvements around an Interstate 95 interchange near the site of a new raceway in Spotsylvania County.

Dominion Raceway will occupy 160 acres near the interchange in the Thornburg area. It’s scheduled to open in early 2015, before road work is expected to begin.

Improvements include widening Mudd Tavern Road and a bridge over the interstate, and construction of a pair of roundabouts.

VDOT residency administrator Sean Nelson tells The Free-Lance Star (https://bit.ly/NdQJCc ) that the goal is to make traffic flow smooth and efficient.

The $7.8 million bridge widening project is almost fully funded and will be the first phase.

The other projects haven’t been approved or funded yet.
