NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport’s city manager is backing a plan to keep high-speed ferry service to Block Island for the next two summers.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) that City Manager Jane Howington is recommending that the City Council approve a two-year contract with the ferry operator for 2014 and 2015. Narragansett-based Interstate Navigation would run the ferry from June 21 to Sept. 1 both years.

The service from downtown Newport to Block Island started last summer on a trial basis and officials say there has been good public response. The trip takes an hour or less.

The City Council is expected to take up the contract Wednesday. The deal calls for the city charging Interstate Navigation an annual fee of $750, plus $25 per landing, for using the Perrotti Park dock.
