CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Nevada Supreme Court is set to rule on whether Reno City Council members barred by term limits from seeking re-election can run for mayor.

At issue is whether the mayor is a separate office or part of the overall governing body of the City Council.

Reno businessman and mayoral candidate George “Eddie” Lorton argues that council members who’ve been in office 12 years cannot run for mayor because term limits approved by voters in 1996 prohibit them from serving on the same governing body.

Former Councilwoman Jessica Sferrazza and current Councilman Dwight Dortch both will have maxed out their time on the council and have been raising money for a mayoral bid.

Their lawyers argue the office of mayor is distinctly different than that of the six council members.
