OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - Mary Juanita Milam, whose late husband was one two men acquitted in the death of teenager Emmett Till, has died in Ocean Springs. She was 87.
She died Jan. 14. Funeral services were Jan. 18 at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O’Keefe Funeral Home.
Milam, a native of Greenville, lived in Ocean Springs for 20 years. Survivors include a son; a sister; a brother; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Her husband, J.W. Milam, died in 1980.
Till, a black 14-year-old from Chicago, was killed after whistling at a white woman in 1955 outside a grocery in Money, Miss.
Authorities alleged Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam killed Till several nights later.
An all-white jury acquitted them. They later confessed in a Look Magazine report. No other charges were ever brought.
