CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) - A former Chesapeake police officer accused of shaking down prostitutes has pleaded guilty to embezzlement.
Michael Mobley faces up to two years in jail and a $5,000 fine. Sentencing is set for June 2 in Chesapeake Circuit Court.
The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1fCC8qJ ) reports that the 29-year-old Mobley entered his plea to two misdemeanor embezzlement counts on Thursday. He resigned Thursday morning prior to the hearing.
Prosecutors say Mobley found Internet advertisements by prostitutes operating out of two hotels and entered their rooms on two occasions in July 2012. He questioned the women under the guise of a police investigation and took money from them, saying it was being seized.
None of the women was arrested.
An investigation began after one woman contacted police about the money.
