ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - The landmark Astoria Column was lighted in pink for breast cancer awareness month, but the City Council has drawn the line at teal for sexual assault awareness month.

Council members says there are dozens of causes and colors each year, some contentious. Mayor Willis Van Dusen says a color-a-month look would be wrong for the column.

The 125-foot concrete column is on a hill above the city.

It was built in the 1920s as a project of the Great Northern Railroad and a descendant of John Jacob Astor, whose Pacific Fur Company settled Astoria. In recent decades, a $1 million local effort restored it.

The Daily Astorian reports (https://bit.ly/1fk1Ns3) the council decided to allow the column to be lighted twice a year for a month each time.
