AP, OTHER MEDIA ASK FLORIDA JUDGE FOR BIEBER VIDEO
A South Florida judge is holding a hearing on a motion by The Associated Press and other media outlets seeking release of police videos made shortly after Justin Bieber’s recent arrest. Bieber’s attorneys want a Miami-Dade County judge to prevent release of the videos until his lawyers can review them for potentially inappropriate material. The AP and other media say there is no legal basis to withhold videos of the 19-year-old pop singer taken at a Miami Beach police station after his Jan. 23 arrest.
HEARING FOR 3 SUSPECTS IN SEAN TAYLOR SLAYING
Trial dates could be set for three remaining suspects in the 2007 slaying of Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor, who was fatally shot during a burglary at his South Florida home. A judge set a Thursday hearing for 26-year-old Jason Mitchell, 24-year-old Charles Wardlow and 22-year-old Timothy Brown. They are each charged with first-degree murder and face possible life in prison.
IMMIGRANT GROUP FETES MIAMI LAWYER, SPANISH CHEF
A Spanish chef and a Cuban-born attorney will get top honors for their work on behalf of the nation’s immigrants in South Florida. Greenberg Traurig Executive Chairman Cesar Alvarez and award-winning chef and restaurateur Jose Andres received the 13th annual Keepers of the American Dream Award and will be feted Thursday during a reception at Andres’ Miami Beach restaurant The Bazaar.
1,000 PIGEONS STOLEN, 100 DEAD IN NORTH FLORIDA
The owner of a north Florida farm says 1,000 homing pigeons were stolen from his property, while another 100 baby birds died from a lack of care from the older birds. The Marion Country Sherriff’s Office reports that detectives are investigating the incident, which took place sometime between Saturday night and early Tuesday morning.
MAN GETS LIFE SENTENCE FOR KILLING WIFE
A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife. A Palm Beach County judge sentenced 49-year-old Slobodan Dragic on Wednesday after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. Authorities say the Bosnian immigrant fatally shot Jelena Dragic as she was preparing to leave for work in September 2010, two weeks after she served him with divorce papers.
